When Vajra Ma wrote and performed her one-woman play that re-visioned the Greek myth of Medea—the woman who infamously murdered her children—she had no idea what a wild ride she was in for. Two weeks before the performance date she was flat on her back, terrified because she did not have a finished script! What was blocking her? She had come face to face with a taboo she did not even know she had. It showed up in a completely unexpected and shocking way. Vajra Ma says "I believe all women in patriarchy experience this taboo on some level in their lives. That's why I named my play 'Medea Everywoman.' In my feminist re-visioning of Medea's story she relives her life by telling it to modern women and through that telling makes discoveries that liberate her and give women the keys to female sovereignty."Vajra Ma has written about this experience in a new anthology coming out March 2025 called "Unleashing the Courageous Feminine: 18 Stories of Strength, Grace and Awakening through Adversity. We will dialogue with Vajra Ma about her chapter "Medea, the Mother and Me".Vajra Ma will share how the taboo she experienced interweaves with what Medea herself experienced, and then how the creative process of writing and performing "Medea Everywoman" broke that taboo. Art imitates life, and life imitates art! She and Medea broke that taboo together. No where else do we see into Medea's relationship with her mother, nor into Medea's intimate relationship with the Dragon—its primal energy and its secret—and what that relationship reveals to Medea and every woman and our world today.• What missteps did Medea make that so many women make today? How can we remedy that in our own lives? How did a story about a woman who murders her children become a healing story for our times?• What the does the mythical "hero" conceal about men? How does the liberate women? Medea discovered it and so can we.• How can creativity and art be therapeutic in ways that traditional therapy often is not?• How can re-visioning ancient myths and stories from a feminist perspective liberate and empower women to re-shape the world?• And what about the Dragon? It plays a role in the Greek version of Medea's tale, but in Vajra Ma's version it shows up in a startling way that gives us a key to female sovereignty.********************
Vajra Ma She teaches outside traditions and codifications with warmth, humor and a bedrock compassion. She is the author of From a Hidden Stream: The Natural Spiritual Authority of Woman and is published in eight anthologies including Foremothers of the Women's Spirituality Movement. With her late husband Wolfgang Nebmaier she co-founded the Shakti Moon Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to cultivating right relationship with Source, particularly Earth and Woman. She is a legally ordained Priestess of Women's Mysteries with ministerial credentials through Temple of Diana, Inc. She lives in the forests of Oregon with her dog, cats, serpents, the Fae and Nature Beings.
